Oil Tempered - ASTM A 229 Spring Wire Properties

High-carbon spring steels are the most commonly used of all springs materials. Try to use these materials in preference to others because they are least expensive, readily available, easily worked, and most popular. These materials are not satisfactory for high or low temperatures or for shock or impact loading.

Heat Treating Oil Tempered:

This material is delivered in pre-tempered condition.  Therefore, no further hardening can be obtained through heating.  However, depending on the application, springs and wire forms will undergo a stress-relieving process.

Manufacturing:

Oil Tempered is cold drawn and heat treated before fabrication.

Uses:

Oil Tempered is a general purpose wire used for springs and wire forms where there are no elevated temperatures.
