Beryllium copper is a copper alloy that is composed of 0.5 to 3% beryllium and other elements. It displays exceptional machining, forming and metalworking capabilities, along with a combination of high strength, non-magnetic and non-sparking qualities. Beryllium copper, also referred to as copper beryllium, spring copper and beryllium bronze is used for manufacturing tools with highly specialized purposes such as: precision measurement devices, musical instruments, tools used in hazardous environments, aerospace applications and bullet rounds.

Copper Beryllium Chemical & Physical Properties

The physical and chemical properties of beryllium bronze metal alloy are as follows:

  • Cu: 98.0%
  • Be: 2.0%
  • Minimum tensile strength: psi x 103 180-200
  • Modulus of elasticity: psi x 106 16-18.5
  • Maximum operating temperature: 400°F (204°C)
  • Rockwell hardness: C39

Age Hardening Beryllium Copper

In its age hardened condition, Beryllium copper C172 (Alloy 25) attains the highest strength and hardness of any commercial copper base alloy. The high-conductivity of beryllium copper alloys is ideally suited to applications requiring high operating temperatures, high strength, and/or high conductivity. The age hardening process of copper beryllium is completed as follows:

  1. Heat to 600-625°F (316-329°C)
  2. Hold for 2-3 hours (depending on initial temper)
  3. Air cool to room temperature
  4. Results in full hard temper

A key advantage of using beryllium copper to produce custom springs and stampings is its ability to be formed in a soft state. It can then be age hardened to achieve spring properties.

Beryllium Bronze Applications

Beryllium copper exhibits many desirable properties, such as good strength and high thermal and electrical conductivity. The material is non-magnetic and heat-treatable. Although they’re more expensive than high-carbon and alloy steels, beryllium copper alloys are preferred for electrical applications. Beryllium bronze’s adaptability makes it ideal for the following types of applications:

Certain tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, and hammers used on oil rigs and coal mines have the letters BeCu on them, indicating they’re are made of copper beryllium and safe to use in those types of volatile environments.

Beryllium copper exhibits good corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, and moderate spring properties. The material is cold drawn to the specified temper. After fabrication, beryllium copper may be age hardened for improved spring properties.
