301 Stainless Steel for Custom Stampings & Springs

Please note that we do not sell stainless steel or any other materials in raw form. Stainless steel is a material option for custom springs, etc., manufactured by Peninsula Spring.

AISI 301/ASTM A 666 Stainless Steel

AISI 301 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel alloy that displays excellent corrosion resistance properties with the added benefits of good strength and ductility when cold worked. It also has excellent corrosion resistance properties. ASTM A 666 stainless steel is well suited for welding, forming and drawing. In addition, 301 stainless steel stampings are available in several conditions or tempers.

Differences Between 301 & 304 Stainless Steel

Both 304 and 301 stainless steels have iron as one of their main elemental ingredients, however, 304 contains more chromium and nickel than AISI 301 so it is a more expensive alloy. When it comes to corrosion resistance both 301 and 304 are similar, but 301 stainless steel stampings tend to be a little less corrosion resistant due to its higher levels of carbon. As far as tensile strength is concerned AISI 301 with its higher carbon content can better withstand increased mechanical force pressures than 304.

ASTM A 666 Stainless Steel Chemical & Physical Properties

The physical and chemical properties of AISI 301 stainless steel stampings are as follows:

  • Cr: 16.0 - 18.0%
  • Ni: 8.0 - 10.0%
  • Minimum tensile strength: psi x 103 240-270
  • Modulus of elasticity: psi x 106 28
  • Maximum operating temperature: 550°F (288°C)
  • Rockwell hardness: C48-52

AISI 301 Stainless Steel Applications

AISI 301 stainless steel is ideal for custom flat springs and custom sheet metal stampings that require resistance to corrosion and elevated temperatures. Common applications for 301 stainless steel stampings, include:

  • Aircraft structural parts
  • Trailer bodies
  • Architectural (roof drainage/door frames, etc.)
  • Auto body trim and wheel covers
  • Utensils and tableware
  • Conveyor parts

AISI 301 Stainless Steel Features & Benefits

AISI 301 stainless steel is the most common and affordable type of stainless alloy. It exhibits good corrosion resistance as well as excellent spring properties. AISI 301 stainless steel can be used for high temperatures up to 550°F (288°C). Some of the other features and benefits of 301 stainless steel stampings, include:

  • Used in a variety of applications.
  • Superior corrosion resistant properties
  • Developed for applications requiring extensive machining operations
  • Non-magnetic properties
  • Scratch resistant
  • Many Finishing options: polishing, beveling, etc.

Heat Treating AISI 301 Stainless Steel

AISI 301 stainless steel is delivered in pre-tempered condition, and, no further hardening can be achieved via heat treating. However, depending on the needs of your application, completed flat springs and sheet metal stampings will undergo a stress-relieving process.
