Compared to AISI 302 stainless steel wire, AISI316 stainless steel wire exhibits better corrosion resistance; the tradeoff, however, is lesser spring properties. AISI 316 stainless steel wire can be used in temperatures up to 550°F (228°C).
AISI 316 stainless steel wire is used to manufacture custom springs and custom wire forms for medical devices and other applications which require better corrosion resistance than AISI 302 stainless steel wire offers. Heat Treating AISI 316 Stainless Steel Wire
316 stainless steel wire is delivered in pre-tempered condition—no further hardening can be obtained through heat treating. However, depending on the application, completed springs and wire forms can undergo a stress-relieving process.
